I love New Orleans. I love the food, the music, the interesting people. I love the quiet mornings and the crazy (but not long anymore) nights. The last time I was there in Aug 2022, some of my favorite restaurants had changed/were closed. The pandemic had had an effect. But I will go back. Beignets, charbroiled oysters, palmiers, bloody marys with spicy beans, gumbo, and muffulettas are calling my name.
What a great essay. So many quite worthy sentences. You are a gifted writer and we are the beneficiaries of your talent. Thanks again and now I want to go to New Orleans
I only have a moment or two before the battery dies.
We had some trouble with the 10 year olds passport had expired.
We put in app for new one 10 weeks before the flight and paid for expedited processing
was supposed to take 7 weeks but here we were 9 weeks later and a week from the flight.
Long story short we have a congresswoman that we campaigned for and her staff hooked us up with emergency visit but it was a long drive up to Connecticut .
While they're getting all the processing done our oldest son called that a package came Fedex and we asked him to open it - it was our passport delivered the day before the flight. They never communicated with us that it was on the way and the status on their website never changed out of processing.
In any event we 3 made it to England - my first time here in about 15 years.
If you get the beignets again, can you take a picture to share? And maybe a photo of some Spanish moss? It's been years and years since I've been to New Orleans (we lived in the suburbs for a couple years when I was growing up). Your trip is taking me down memory lane.
You have just induced a serious case of nostalgia for New Orleans. We haven't been in several years since Mr. got so violently ill last time he couldn't even enjoy Atchafalaya's Bloody Mary bar. Bad case of the flu since our NOLA party days had long since passed. I recognized that description of the first meal as Cochon - one of our favorites as well. And if you haven't been, Coquette is stellar. If you have, you already know that. Looking forward to reading more about your trip to NOLA!
Celebrated my 50th birthday in NOLA! In December and it was so cold! But what a fun place to visit. The food ..oh the glorious food!! Have a wonderful time and thanks for sharing your journey with us.
As usual, so much to relate to. I’m taking my first solo (non-business) trip in two weeks and this is exactly how I want it to be. Not rushing off to anything. Doing things at my own pace. I aspire to the kind of vacation you’ve described. Enjoy the rest of your stay and please eat a beignet for me. (I can no longer have them due to a Celiacs diagnosis in 2015. 😩)
I always treasure time away with my family and recognize that the time with my kids is fleeting. My almost 20 year old has already skipped the last few trips. I know you & your son will make the most of this trip. It’s great that you have the opportunity to show him a place that has a special place in your heart.
Great travel writing. You’ve my attitude to travel: get up early and bimble, feed off what you find.
Enjoy!✨🖤✨

Sounds divine, glad it all worked out for you both.

I would love to add a pic of my first snapshot
Glad the trip is off to a good start!

You are becoming the Anthony Bourdain of Twitter. I love it!

I love the stories of everything you and your son do. I wish I had done more of that.
Sounds perfect. Glad you're in such a special place with your favorite human. Revel in it, Mike.
No “rusher” here, either.
The best way to be on vacation at any place. Not only can you wind down from running in the day-to-day hamster wheel.
It also allows you to “breathe” the place. Soak up its energy, the sounds, the pace, the atmosphere.
Love to do it.
One of the reasons we have a camper van.

Perfection. Thank you SO much for writing.
